As a small, female owned business in today’s uncertain world, we at Loyal Dog Club feel a desire and responsibility to introduce you to other small businesses that are similar to ours!   Of course our first instinct was to find someone who offers a service we are sure all our loyal club members could benefit from – an AT HOME grooming company that will come right to you and your pets!

Meet Amanda Turner, owner of Boujee Poochie!   That’s right, Boujee Poochie is a mobile groomer who will come directly to your home and take care of all of your pup scrubbin’ needs!   Below is a Q&A with Amanda that will give you a feel for who she is, why her service is fit for YOUR pup, and learn a bit more about her background in taking care of our beloved companions!

Loyal Dog Club (LDC): First off – tell us about yourself!  Who are you, where are you from, what made you start grooming and how long ago was that?

Amanda, Owner of Boujee Poochie: I am Amanda-or at least that’s what I’ve been told for the last 25 years. 😂 I’m from Farmington Hills. Spent most of my life in this city. I was working at one of the big box pet stores and absolutely loved working with animals, I honestly loved it more than I thought I would.  So, I quickly learned all the positions I could and began climbing that corporate ladder. I got into the dog grooming world specifically 7 years ago.

LDC: What is your grooming experience?   How many years and where have you done grooming?  Do you groom ALL animals?

Amanda: I went to Academy for grooming 7 years ago and became a fully licensed and certified groomer 6 years ago. It was a great decision! I worked 4 more years at the major box store before moving away and working at a vet’s office. The vet’s office did not treat pets in a way I could support so I swiftly left there and started grooming mainly for friends and family. I officially only groom the pooches. Fun fact: I can/have groomed horses and cows before (sore for about two days after that)!!

LDC: What made you decide it was time to work on your own business at Boujee Poochie?   What sets Boujee Poochie apart from other groomer options that people may have?

Amanda: I truly wasn’t planning to launch Boujee Poochie for another year. If I were to show you the charts and maps for what Boujee Poochie was to be versus what it is now, you’d be shocked at the difference. I decided to speed up the timeline and change all plans because of COVID-19. The world is so uncertain and going out poses a risk to everyone.  With my business, we come to the client, making this one less outing you have to take. My ultimate goal is to keep all parties as safe as possible. For the time being I’ve been doing a lot of grooming on back porches, driveways, shady spots in the yard and garages.

LDC: Let’s get down to the nitty gritty.  Tell us your FAVORITE and LEAST favorite things about being a groomer.  What can clients do to help you help their pets?

Amanda: The best part about being a groomer is watching the pooch prance/strut their stuff after a groom. There is nothing as adorable or hilarious as that. I mean it makes sense though! We feel good after a good cut/color!

The worst is nicking a dog. Hands down. I would take 1,000 bites and scratches a week if it meant I’d never nick a dog again. In my 7 years I have nicked less than a handful, but I can still tell you each dog’s name, where on their body it happened, and how/why it occurred. It’s scarring to me as a person. The amount of guilt/shame/sorrow I feel when it happens …is indescribable.

LDC:  What is your long term vision and goal for Boujee Poochie?  Any advice for someone starting out  their own business and/or grooming mistakes you’d like people to stop making on their own?

Amanda: My long term goal for Boujee Poochie is to make this my full time gig instead of side business. I have many plans but it all depends on how things pan out in the now.

Advice for someone starting out: seize the day! There will never be a perfect time to start or perfect announcement day. Not to quote Nike but… JUST DO IT!!!!

To the humans: DONT TRIM YOUR DOG’S FACES. I know it was you, don’t do it. It’s SO hard to fix a home groom, especially on faces. They generally can’t be fixed in one visit.

LDC: Any tips on cutting pet’s nails who HATE IT?  Or do you have to keep this a secret so we will call you for help?

Amanda: Soooo I won’t give out my secret. (Also, there really aren’t many secrets because every pet is different).  BE PATIENT! Honestly, that’s the biggest thing. A little understanding and remaining calm goes a long way with *most* fur babies.
